Terry and Marcia Fieland (Practitioner '93; Master Prac '94; Assisted Prac '95, and Prac '96) sold their print shop in Moline a year ago and, after scouting out the West and Southwest for a place to live, moved to Salt Lake City where they are now working with Anchor Point Associates, Tim Halbom and Suzi Smith's organization. Terry is editing * Anchor Point: The Practical Journal of NLP* and Marcia is designing brochures and doing other things. If you don't already receive Anchor Point, we recommend that you call or write for subscription information:

Susan Munaker (Intern for Practitioner '91) completed her Doctorate in Organizational Behavior and Development and has formed Susan Munaker and Associates. She is seeking clients and NLP collaborators who are interested in thorough-going change and in co-creating future visions. Her dissertation *The Great AHA! A Path to Transformation* is available; contact her via email: smunaker@mcs.net

What is your news? Are there issues (Like the Fielands relocating) that you talked about a lot in practitioner class? Wouldn't you like to let us all know how this came out? Have you married? Gone into a new field? Had a baby? Let us know!

NLP AT WORK, PART 1: HOW DO YOU BECOME A TRAINER OF PRACTITIONERS?

We are often asked how people make the leap from Certified Practitioner or Master Practitioner to training others in certification programs. The two most recent additions to our trainer list are perfect examples of how it works at the NLP Institute of Chicago. Marilyn Veditz joined our Master Practitioner line-up last fall, teaching Core Transformation, and Gail Schiesser is the new person in our 1997 Practitioner Training, teaching Meta-Model and Well-Formed Outcome.

An opening occurs when someone who has trained for us in the past is not available. Connirae Andreas was not accepting training assignments in Master Practitioner packages, in order to devote her attention to other pursuits, so we needed someone to take over the Core Transformation section of Master Practitioner. Similarly, Tim Hallbom and Suzi Smith had decided not to train in Practitioner-level programs outside of their own institute.

Criteria for choosing a replacement include:

  • Extensive knowledge of the whole training content and how it fits together, generally gained through years of assisting at Certification trainings.

Demonstrated competence in presenting this material or similar material. We might experience that competence by observation of a live seminar, such as a presentation at our Mini-Conference, or by a videotape of a trainer working with a group.

  • Responding to our needs as an institute and to the needs of our students. Trainers typically demonstrate this through their willingness to make adjustments in training material and methods, by asking for and using feedback, and by leaving classes in good shape for the next trainer. We get hints of this by the way they talk about past and future classes and by the behaviors we observe in live training situations. For example, at a conference presentation, do they respect students' commitment by starting on time and ending on time? Do they pay attention to institutional needs at a conference by arriving early, being well-prepared, getting handouts to us early, reporting back on how the session went, etc.?
  • Respect and ecology are the core values of the institute, and violations of them tend to pop out at us. If someone wants to train for us, then either breaks rapport or violates our values of respect for each other and for our students, or behaves in a manner that seems unecological to us, then some kind of clean-up work is needed to re-establish rapport. If a potential trainer fails to notice the loss of rapport, or fails to regain rapport at that level of shared values, then that trainer is probably not a match for our organization.
If you are interested in training for us, we will be happy to talk with you about what might help you be in the pool for consideration next time we have an opening.

NLP AT WORK, PART 2: SELLING NLP BY THE MINUTE

Lillian Berg (Practitioner '91, Master Prac '92, Intern/Assistant/Coordinator '92-'96) was teaching Ecstatic Dance at Healing Earth Resources when she noticed that tarot card readers and other practitioners of divination were selling their services at the store and charging by the time used. So she made arrangements to provide lifestyle consulting, using her NLP skills as well as her knowledge of nutrition and yoga, on the same walk-in basis at Healing Earth Resources.

NLP AT HOME

We would like to present your success stories here. How has NLP helped you with children, parents, spouses, dating, etc.? Let us know, and we'll spread the word.

NLP RESOURCES: BOOKS AND BOOK SOURCES

There are two new books out by Joseph O'Connor and Ian McDermott. We haven't seen these books yet, but have enjoyed other books by them, so have great expectations about these two new titles:

*Practical NLP for Managers*

*NLP and Health: Neuro-Linguistic Programming*

If you haven't seen the NLP section at Transitions BookPlace (1000 W. North Ave, Chicago) you owe yourself the opportunity to visit! Transitions has sponsored several NLP talks in their coffee shop, as well as bringing in a steady flow of speakers on other aspects of personal development and spirituality.

NLP RESOURCES ON THE WEB

We heard about the two books listed above from the automatic book update fairy at Amazon Books. you'll find Amazon books online at: http://www.amazon.com/

You can search their massive book listings by title, subject area, or keyword and you can have them notify you when new books are published in your area of interest.

Robert Dilts Home Page includes a Pattern of the Month. Check it out at: http://www.nlpu.com/

INSIDE THE NLP INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

We've redesigned the Practitioner Training to include three full weekend of integration so that students get more opportunities to practice and to generalize their learning. 1996 was the first year under the new plan, and we were very pleased with the skills of the class when they finished.

We have also experimented with teaching Submodalities near the beginning of the program, instead of near the end. As always, there are advantages to each placement, but it's worked out well so far. Students have a better grasp of representational systems and submodalities as they learn the rest of the material, and we use some time in the integration weekends to come back to one or two of the submodality patterns after the class has learned the language patterns that make the change patterns work better.

COMING EVENTS: NLP INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

REQUESTS

This area of the newsletter for your networking. Do you want to form a study group? Find others interested in applying NLP to stamp-collecting? See who else is using their NLP skills in a particular area (geographic or subject-matter)? Do you have office space available? Let us know and we'll get the word out.

Several people have asked who is using NLP for therapy in managed care. If you are on managed care panels, please share information with us.

Virginia Brubaker is interested in talking to others who are familiar with John Gottman's research on divorce prediction and have thought about how to use NLP to help couples be more successful. If you have ideas to share, or want to be part of developing some, contact Virginia: brubaker@nlpchicago.com

ABOUT THE NEWSLETTER

We're just getting started with this newsletter. For the moment, we're only sending the newsletter to graduates of our own certification programs (and to our trainers), although you are welcome to send it on to others. At some point in the future, we may also make it available by broadcast fax to those without email. We have no plans at present to print and mail hard copy, unless a volunteer comes forward to handle the work involved and potential subscribers are willing to pay for the service. We'll see how the newsletter evolves and let that guide future decisions about making it available to graduates of other institutes and (possibly) to those who are interested in NLP but have not taken certification training.

Please send us your news, requests, information, book reviews, etc. Send material to: brubaker@nlpchicago.com We have fond hopes of publishing approximately monthly, but the volume of your response will be the deciding factor.

Thank you for your support of the NLP Institute of Chicago, and of this newsletter! Klaus and I wish you a winter that is warm and yummy on the inside, whatever the weather on the outside!
